One of the most common questions asked of us at the agency is “my child just got their learners permit, do I have to add them as a driver?” The answer to this question is no, you do not have to add them as a driver to your policy in order for them to be covered. Once they obtain their driver’s license number then we will add them. Your policy will cover your student driver as long as they have your permission to drive your car and are following the rules and regulations set forth by the state.
The restrictions regarding driving in CT with a learners permit are as follows. For the entire time a driver holds a learner’s permit, he or she may not have any passengers except for either- a licensed driving instructor giving instruction and others accompanying that instructor. Or a person, who is providing instruction and is at least 20 years old, has held a driver’s license for four or more consecutive years and whose license has not been suspended during the four years prior to training. Parents or legal guardian may accompany the instructor. There is no curfew but they must be accompanied by a qualified person as noted above. They must wear a seatbelt and may not use cell phones, even hands free or any other mobile device or device with video display.
